Abstract

435,712. Stabilizing fins for flying- boats. SAUNDERS-ROE, Ltd., KNOWLER, H., and FARROW, J. R., Medina Road, East Cowes, Isle of Wight. April 21, 1934, No. 12056. [Classes 4 and 113 (ii)] The lateral stabilizing fins of flying-boats are backward swept at an angle exceeding 15‹ to the perpendicular to the line of flight into a position in which their leading edges lie approximately parallel to the line of the wave which is thrown outwardly and backwardly on both sides of the bow of the hull when moving through water. The amount of sweep back for any given hull may be determined by towed model tests. Several forms of float are described, all of streamline section so set as to have little or no positive angle of incidence in flight at cruising speed. Fig. 1 shews a hull having fins b, b<1> of which the trailing edges are parallel to the swept back leading edges. In a modification, Fig. 3, the trailing edges c<3> are normal to the direction of flight but are cut away at c<4> to reduce the resistance set up by the spray thrown up from the main step. According to further modifications the fins may have rounded corners in plan view and their tips rounded as shown in Fig. 6, and may form a continuation of the transverse section of the hull bottom. The fins are located either amidships or somewhat forward of amidships.
