Abstract

435,664. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION, 270, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Reppert, R. von) Dec. 10, 1934, No. 35436. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1933. [Class 100 (iv)] Relay type-lever actions.-A keycontrolled coupling-member is operated by a toothed driving-roller and co-operates directly with a cammember adapted to impart an accelerated movement to a type-member. Electromagnetic means may be provided for controlling the coupling- member from a remote point and independently of the key. In the action shown in the Figure, a typelever 36 engages a sub-lever 32 having a cam 33 co-operating with a toothed disc or coupling-member 8 which is pivoted on a bell-crank 9 and can co-operate with a toothed driving- roller 1. The disc is normally locked by means of a plate 17, and a detent 12 which is pivoted on the bell-crank and connected to a spring 13. The bell-crank rests on a strong spring 45 and is held by the spring 13 in engagement with a pivoted dog 22 on the key-lever 18. The driving-roller has saw-shaped, rounded teeth, and the teeth of the disc are shaped to fit the tooth-spaces of the driving-roller. On slight depression of the key-lever, the dog 22 is released, the bell-crank is slightly rocked by the spring 13, and the disc engages the driving- roller. If the driving-roller is so positioned that the tooth S' abuts on the tooth R<3>, the disc is momentarily locked until the tooth S<2> can enter gradually into a tooth-space, the arrangement preventing noise and wear due to clashing of the teeth. Similarly, if the tooth S<2> is adjacent to the front of a tooth R3, the tooth S<1> abuts on the tooth R<1> and momentarily locks the disc. Thereafter, the tooth S<2> enters fully into a tooth-space, the teeth S<4>, S<5> are released from the plate 17 and detent 12, and the disc is turned through one tooth-interval and is arrested by the plate and detent. During movement of the disc, the type-lever is swung for impression with an accelerated movement. The latter half of the movement of the typelever is effected by momentum. During movement of the disc, the bell-crank 9 is depressed slightly and returned, and is normally arrested by the dog 22. If however, the key-lever is not released quickly, the bell-crank is arrested by another pivoted dog 26 on the key-lever, and engagement with the dog 22 occurs on release of the key-lever. The dogs 22, 26 may be omitted. If the type-lever is obstructed, the spring 45 yields considerably and the driving- roller runs idly over the disc, damage being thereby prevented. The mechanism is lubricated by means of a wick 65 which dips into a trough 66 and engages the driving-collar. To permit of remote control of the action, small electromagnets M are provided with armatures 39 connected to bell-cranks 43 engaging the dogs 22, energization of any electromagnet intiating operation of the associated type-lever independently of the key-lever. Remote control may be provided for certain type-levers only, for instance the numeral type-levers of a calculating-machine. Keys.-To permit adjustment of the impression in accordance with the number of carbon copies required, a returning-spring 55 for a universal bail 50 operated by the type-levers 36 is connected to a lever 54 having a sector 56 co-operating with a worm 58 on a shaft 59 provided with an adjusting-knob 60. A pointer 61 on the knob is arranged over a scale 62.
