Abstract

Ethylene azo-dyes or acid addition products thereof are prepared by coupling with diazonium salts ethylenes of the formula <FORM:0435449/IV/1> wherein R and R<1> signify aryl groups substituted by at least one group imparting a positive character (i.e. methoxy, hydroxy, amino, dimethylamino, phenylamino) and R<11> stands for a monovalent atom or group, or acid addition products thereof. Acid addition products of the dyes (carbenium salts) spontaneously or in the presence of an acid binding agent pass into the dyes themselves. In examples: (1) 2-naphthylamine-6,8-disulphonic acid is diazotized and coupled with tetramethyldiaminodiphenylethylene; the product dyes wool bordeaux-red shades from an alkaline bath, and on acidifying an intense blue shade is obtained; (2) p-nitrophenylantidiazotate is coupled (acid) with dianisylethylene. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the manufacture of ethylene azo dyes or acid addition products thereof by coupling with diazonium salts ethylenes of the above formula wherein R stands for hydrogen or a group of the type of R<1> which stands for an amphoteric auxochrome (defined as covering, inter alia, an aryl group or vinylene group) or a group imparting a positive character (see above, and R<11> stands a monovalent atom or group, or acid addition products thereof. Starting materials mentioned are a .a -phenylethylene, a p - anisyl - a - phenylethylene, a .a - diveratrylethylene, a - dimethylaminophenyl - a - phenylethylene, a .a - tetramethyldiaminodiphenyl - b - methylethylene, a .a - tetramethyldiaminodiphenyl - b - phenylethylene and a .a - diethoxynaphthylethylene as coupling components and aniline, nitraniline or a sulpho derivative, anisidine, benzidine, aminoazobenzenedisulphonic acid, naphthylamine sulphonic acid or aminoanthraquinone as diazo bodies. In a further example diazotized sulphanilic acid is coupled (acid) with tetramethyldiaminodiphenylethylene; the product dyes wool from an alkaline bath red shades changed to blue by acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
