Abstract
435,413. Controlling motor vehicles. SMART, A., College Avenue, Newcastle-on- Tyne. March 20, 1934, No. 8766. [Class 79 (v)] A foot - operated control of the kind wherein two controls may be independently or simultaneously operated comprises a brake or other lever a having a head m which serves as a fulcrum for the instep of the driver's foot, and a second throttle lever r pivoted to the first lever at k between the head m and the pivot b of the latter, the second lever having a forwardlyextending arm r engaged at s by the toe part of the foot and a rearwardly-extending arm j pivoted to a throttle-controlling link g. The head m of the brake lever has side wings p to prevent the foot slipping sideways ; these wings may be extended and arched to form a stirrup for the foot. A roller may be mounted on the head m to be engaged by the instep. In a modification a plate shaped to the sole of the foot rests loosely on the head s of the second lever and its rear end hooks over the head m of the first lever. This plate saves the driver's boot from the rubbing action caused by relative movement between the heads m, s. In both constructions this rubbing acts as a brake to damp vibrations of the throttle lever r. Specification 312,014, [Class 79 (v)], is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification (1) the head of the second lever may be at the rear of the first lever so as to be engaged by the driver's heel, and (2) a stop for the driver's heel may be provided on either the first or the second lever so that the brake can be applied by heel pressure.
