Abstract
435,062. Plug couplings combined with switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JACOBS, H., c/o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. May 14, 1934, No. 14526. [Class 38 (i)] The plug member of a coupling is locked in engagement with the socket member when a switch on the latter is closed by a screwthreaded spindle 44 that turns in a block 25 associated with the earthing-socket 8 and grips the earthing-pin therein. A lever 43 on the spindle is acted upon by two arms 39, 40 carried by a slide 37 connected to the switch-operating lever 13. The slide has a projection 46 corresponding to an aperture 52 in a locking-plate 47 that prevents the switch from being closed in the position shown in Fig. 2, but is slid to the right so as to allow the projection 46 to move into the aperture 52 when the plug member is inserted, the earthing-pin depressing a cross-bar on a sliding ring 20 surrounding the earthing-socket and pressed forward by a spring 24, connection between the plate 47 and ring 20 being made by a bell-crank lever 27. The switch consists of double-pole bridging-contacts 55, 56 cooperating with clip contacts 57 connected to the terminals 60 and to the supply sockets. The slide 37 may act positively on the switch arm 54 during the first part of the opening movement, but the main connection between the lever 13 and arm 54 is made through a quick make-and-break toggle mechanism. The switch mechanism and socket contacts are mounted on a plate 14 carried by the cover-plate 1 with spacers 16 between. The connection between the switch and the screwed spindle for locking the plug in the socket may be made through a spring.
