434,913. Catalytic igniters. HAMMERLING, E., 521, 5th Avenue, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 22, 1934, No. 36850. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1933. [Class 75 (iii)] The casing 1 is lined with a wick sleeve 2 and is divided by a partition 3 into a lower chamber containing absorbent material 12 for the fuel and an upper chamber containing the catalyst, and the detachable cover 17 is provided with a flanged thimble 18 adapted to compress a rubber or like gasket 11 for sealing the upper portion of the wick by means of lateral expansion of the gasket when the igniter is not in use. The partition 3 rests on protuberances 4 and the cover is attached as by means of internal projections co operating with split threads on the casing. The wick 2 is held in place above the parti. tion by a gauze X. The catalyst comprises platinum wires 9 and a platinum black or like pill 10 carried by a wire support 7 fitted by means of a coiled end on a projection 5. Gaskets 16, 23 may be provided in a screw filling cap 15 and the cover 17 and a vent hole 22 in the latter. In a modification, the cap 15 extends nearly to the level of the partition and is provided with a hole in the side so that it can be drawn down to admit air and then returned to force air and fuel to the flame. In this form, the partition and absorbent material may be replaced by a fuel container having side apertures at the base leading to the wick.
