Abstract

Synthetic resins are prepared by heating a phenol with a phenol di-alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst and in the presence or absence of a vegetable oil, natural resins or their esters and if desired in the presence of an inert gas. The products may be used in the manufacture of lacquers and varnishes. Suitable phenol dialcohols include that derived from p-cresol by treatment with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda and suitable phenols include mononuclear and dihydric dinuclear phenols such as those obtained from phenols and higher aldehydes or ketones. In examples resins are prepared by heating in the presence of hydrochloric acid a mixture of (1) p-cresol di-alcohol and cresylic acid; (2) phenol and the di-alcohols derived from cresylic acid; (3) p-cresol dialcohol and p-tertiary butyl phenol; (4) p-cresol di-alcohol, diphenylolethane and di-p-cresylolethane; (5) p-cresol di - alcohol, di - p - cresylolethane and chinawood oil; (6) p-cresol di-alcohol, diphenylolethane and chinawood oil and (8) p-cresol dialcohol, di-p-cresylol propane and esterified resin.
