Abstract

Artificial filaments, threads, yarns, fabrics, and the like are subjected to treatment with a solvent, swelling or softening agent, under such conditions that the agent does not completely penetrate the filaments and the like, and are then subjected to dyeing or other wet textile operation in rope or other folded form. The action of the solvent or other agent is restricted so that it affects only the outer layers of the filaments or the like by applying small quantities, and/or by removing the agent from the filaments or the like, for example by washing, after a relatively short period of contact. The process may be applied to the treatment of materials of regenerated cellulose or of cellulose derivatives. Suitable solvents, swelling or softening agents are thiocyanates, caustic soda, zinc chloride, formic or acetic acid, lactic acid, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl lactate, diethyl tartrate, ethers, glycol mono-acetate, methyl or ethyl glycol mono-acetate, tetrachlorethane, trichlorethylene, dichlorethylene, phenols, and ethyl alcohol. The following examples are given of treatments applied before dyeing or other wet textile operation on the fabric in rope form: (1) and (2) cellulose acetate fabric is padded with a 10 per cent aqueous solution of formic acid, acetic acid, or ethylene glycol mono-acetate, given an air run for 30 seconds and washed; (3) cellulose acetate fabric is passed through a bath containing 80 per cent of tetrachlorethane and 20 per cent of toluene for about two minutes, washed with toluene, and dried.
