[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-In making seam - welded tubes, particularly by the atomic hydrogen process, a welding clamp for closing the seam or feeding the tube or both, of the kind comprising a number of pairs of jaws carried by or forming part of a continuously movable endless belt or chain with the jaws of each pair cyclically engaging and disengaging the tube so as only to disengage the tube after the jaws of another pair have moved into engagement therewith, has the jaws of a pair spring opened and stops are provided to limit the closure of the jaws on the tube. The jaws may also form the metal strips into tubular form. The pairs of jaws 1, 2 which are carried upon or form part of an endless belt or chain traversed by sprocket wheels, are each mounted on two pairs of pins 3, 4, the pins 3 being screwed into the jaws 2 and being provided with springs 5 for pressing open the jaws, and with stop nuts 6. The sets of jaws are connected by links 7, 8 to form a chain, the links being separated by chain bushes 9, which also serve to limit the pressure on the tube. When the jaws engage the tapered ends 24, 25 of guide rails 15, 16 they are closed on the tube 10, shoulders 17, 18 preventing movement of the jaws vertically. The guide 15 is fixed and the guide 16 is under the pressure of a spring 20 adjusted by a screw 21 carried by a fixed guide 22. The jaws open as they pass out of contact with the guides and during their return motion they pass through a container in which cooling fluid is circulated.
