Abstract

A concentrated food product is made from raw materials containing animal protein by extracting with ether and petroleum ether to remove fat and lipoids, and then submitting the product to hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid. Excess hydrochloric acid is removed by distillation, preferably under reduced pressure, and quick lime is added to render the product alkaline and precipitate iron, humin, &c. The precipitate is filtered off and the filtrate treated with tartaric acid to precipitate excess lime, which is also removed by filtration. The filtrate is shaken with petroleum ether to remove odours and the product then allowed to concentrate in the atmosphere to form a nutrient syrup. Blood paste obtained by removing the serum from the blood of animals, their intestines, or fish meat, or fish blood may be treated.
