Abstract

432,530. Renovating worn rails. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. March 27, 1935, No. 9585. Convention date, March 27, 1934. [Class 83 (iv)] Welding by fusion.-In a process of renovating the worn ends of rails, a straightedge is laid along the tops of the rails 1, 2, to indicate the extent of the worn portions 4, 5, oblique lines 6, 7 are marked on the rails to indicate the inner boundary of the welding areas, diagonal lines 8, 9 are marked to divide the welding areas into triangles and weld metal is deposited in the form of a flat sinuous bead 10 which is continuous in each triangular area. The lines 6, 7 may intersect the worn surfaces at the sides of the rails, as shown, or may lie outside these lines, and the lines 6 . . . 9 may, e.g. be chalk lines. The welding operations, which may be made by arc welding, start at the vertices 11 of the triangles, opposite the diagonals 8, 9, and terminate at one end of each diagonal, as at 12, 13 so that craters formed by termination of the arc will not be located in the body of the deposited metal. Alternatively, the electrode may be directed away from the rail joint x along the edge of the rail and the arc length gradually increased until it is broken. The turns of each sinuous deposit overlap each other considerably, preferably by 50 per cent, as shown in Fig. 3, and the final turns on each rail overlap completely along the diagonals 8, 9. After welding the rail surfaces are reduced to a common level, preferably by grinding, and if necessary the joint x is slotted to remove surplus metal.
