Abstract

432,343. Forging bolts &c. KUHNE, J., 34, Burgunderstrasse, Heerdt, and KUHNE GES., 131, Hansa-allee, Oberkassel, both in D³sseldorf, Germany. March 1, 1935, No. 6569. [Class 83 (iv)] The invention is directed to the more rapid production of bolt heads by upsetting in machines of the type in which the work is gradually uncovered during operation. The apparatus comprises, as shown, a die 5 carrying the work 14, and an upsetting die 16, the movement of the die 5 backwardly to uncover the work being accelerated toward the end of the operation. The die 16 is carried by a mechanically operated slide 15, through which passes a rod 22, capable of engaging the die holder 3, and forcing it backwardly against the action of a spring 9. The rod 22 is moved by a lever 23, pivoted at 25 on the slide 15, and carrying a roller 27 engaging a fixed cam surface 26. The cam surface provides the required acceleration of the backward movement of the die holder 3. Disc or other strong springs 20 prevent strain on the machine. The movement of an ejector 12 is timed to agree with that of the slide 15. The die 5 comprises a stepped tube, which is adjusted by means of an interchangeable sleeve 7, a screw threaded ring 6 and washers 8. The die 16 has an interchangeable bottom 17 to vary the cavity. Instead of the construction shown for operating the work holding die, it may be moved positively in both directions by a cam and linkage, the cam having two concentric parts joined by parts giving quick movement.
