Abstract

Impurities are removed from raw or manufactured waste textile material by treatment with a water-insoluble carboxylic acid, e.g. a fatty acid, in amount not less than half the weight of the material, followed by removal of the bulk of the acid, treatment with ammonia solution or alkali to convert the acid retained by the fibre into a soap, and simultaneous or subsequent washing of the soap containing material. Specified materials treated are wool, cotton, hair and silk, especially wool containing pitch or morbid perspiration, pianoforte felts, and raw cotton soiled with resin or colouring matter. Specified carboxylic acids are lauric, palmitric, stearic, myristic, elaidic and oleic acids and dichloro derivatives thereof. Such acids may be recovered by treating the washing liquors with a mineral acid. The following examples are specified. (1) Raw wool containing pitch is washed to remove sand, loose dirt and easily removable fat and is then soaked for 5--20 hours in twice its weight of commercial oleine at normal or slightly raised temperature, squeezed or centrifuged, and washed in a weak alkaline bath at 50 DEG C. (2) Raw cotton soiled with resin or colouring matter is soaked for 20 hours in twice its weight of arachis-oleic acid, squeezed, placed in 5 per cent potash lye, centrifuged and washed in a second alkaline bath. Specifications 10834/92 and 19144/01, [both in Class 15], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also (a) any treatment with one or more solvents of high boiling point followed by washing in an aqueous bath; specified solvents are water-soluble amines, e.g. pyridine, quinoline, ethylenediamine or ethanolamine, esters, e.g. the aralkyl, glycol or glycerol esters of higher fatty acids, salts of these acids, aliphatic sulpho-acids, sulphamine acids or sulpho-ester acids, especially in the form of the sodium or potassium salts or the esters, e.g. of stearic-, palmitic- or elaidicsulpho - acid, oleylaminoethane - sulpho - acid, ricinoleic-sulpho-acid or oleyl alcohol-sulpho-acid, aqueous solutions of sulphonated fats or oils, e.g. of turkey-red oil or sulphonated tallow, and aqueous solutions of the corresponding phosphoric acid esters; (b) an example in which raw wool, soiled with pitch, is soaked in pyridine or oleylaminoethylenedimethylamine, squeezed and washed with a weak solution of soap; (c) an example in which raw wool soiled with waxy perspiration is soaked for 6--8 hours in 50 per cent turkey red oil at 20 DEG C., squeezed, centrifuged and washed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
