Abstract

<PICT:0431504/III/1> Apparatus for manufacturing flakes and the like from plastic materials containing vegetable matter, e.g. cereals, comprises a plurality of nozzles, or a member containing outlet apertures, to which the material is supplied under pressure, means for periodically interrupting the supply to cause the material to be ejected from the nozzles or apertures in the form of units, a surface on which the units fall and become spread out, and heating means to solidify the units. The surface in which the units fall is preferably endless and movable, e.g. a band or roller. The heating may be effected by steam, gas or electricity. The units 34 from the distributing device 32 fall on a moving belt 59 and are carried over a heating chamber 65 and through an oven 66, heated at one end by a gas burner 68, to a shoot 74. The combustion gases from the burner 68 pass around a portion of the oven 66 and then through a conduit 69 to the chamber 65. Alternatively the units may fall in a heated drum which delivers them to a horizontal belt passing through the oven 66. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the products, which may include chemicals, may be formed also into cakes or tablets or in the form of "spin." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
