Abstract

430,856. Toothed gearing for converting rotary into reciprocating motion; knitting-machines. TAYLOR MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and EVANS, J. G., 17, Grange Lane, Leicester. May 9, 1934, No. 14035. [Class 80 (i)] [See also Group VIII] The arcuate ends of a mangle rack are longitudinally adjustable between the sides to vary the stroke. In the form shown, the end parts 3 of the rack are formed with U-shaped lugs 7 which can be secured to the fixed straight portions 1 at various places by bolts 8. The driving pinion 5 is eccentrically mounted in a disc 11, Fig. 7, mounted in a carriage 14 slidable on rods 25. The pinion 5 meshes with a concentric pinion 24 rigidly connected to a bevel gear 20 meshing with a bevel wheel, not shown, which is slidably keyed on the driving shaft 16. The disc 11 is locked to the carriage 14 by a spring-pressed plunger 29 during the traverse, this pin being disengaged for reversal by pins 34 fixed to the end parts 3. While the pinion 5 is passing round the end teeth 4, a rib 42 on the disc 11 passes behind a rib 43 concentric with these teeth to preserve the mesh. Towards the end of the reversing movement, a shoe 38 pivoted on the disc 11 engages the front of the rib 43 and compresses a spring 40. This provides friction to steady the last part of the reversal and the energy stored in the spring initiates the return movement. Rubber bushes 67 are provided on the ejector pins 34 to cushion the reversals. The racks are joined to end plates 18, which are also connected by stretcher bars 44, so that the whole forms a self-contained unit. In a modification, the carriage 14 slides directly on the side racks 1. In the application to a flat knitting-machine, Fig. 2, the axle 10 of the pinion 5 is provided with a block 52 working in a groove 51 in a bracket 50 fixed to the cam carriage 49. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 179,162, [Class 80 (i)].
