Abstract
430,793. Parachutes. UTIN, S., 54, High Street, Marylebone, and ARNOLD, F., 39, Wimpole Street, Cavendish Square, both in London. Oct. 26, 1934, No. 30751. [Class 4] A parachute which may be distended to carry an aircraft is positioned on the upper surface of an aircraft in a folded condition and is normally housed in an open topped receptacle 4 to which the ropes of the parachute are attached ; the parachute is provided centrally with a plate 2 adapted to form a cover for the receptacle 4; a tube 7 depends from the receptacle and houses a spring 8 which is held between a fixed collar 9 and a plunger 11 provided with handles 12 and mounted on a rod 10 ; prior to folding the parachute the plunger 11 is depressed and the lower screwthreaded end 14 of the rod 10 is engaged by a nut 16 provided on a hand wheel 17 and turning in a gland 15 ; during folding of the parachute a rod 19 on the plate 2 enters the tube 7 and a piston 20 provided with four rollers 21 and mounted on the end of the rod 19 rests against the plunger 11. The container is positioned on a substantially vertical axis passing through the centre of gravity of the aircraft. If the aircraft gets out of control the parachute is released by rotation of the handle 17 which frees the rod 10 and plunger 11 allowing the spring 8 to expand, forcing up the rod 19 and the plate 2 and initiating opening of the parachute. Relative rotation of the rod 19 and tube 7 is prevented by a pin 23 which engages slots 24 in the tube. The collar 9 and gland 10 are connected by a tube 22.
