Abstract

430,378. Piles or columns for foundations. BRITISH STEEL PILING CO., Ltd., POUND, E. C., and HILEY, A., Thames House, Millbank, London. April 12, 1934, No. 11093. [Class 68 (ii)] A sectional concrete hollow pile or like cylindrical unit comprises sections held together by longitudinal tie rods, keeping them in compression, in which state the pile &c. is driven. Fig. 1 shows a completed pile comprising precast tubular units 2 ; the central bores 3 have slightly flared ends 5 in which are fitted short tubular positioning-sleeves 15. The shoe 6 is also flared, and is made with a shoulder 8 and with lugs 10 slotted to receive tubular tie rods 12. The units 2 are jointed by the positioning-sleeves 15, by a mixture of rubber latex and cement in the annulus between the sleeves 15 and the ends of the units 2, and by a sealing-band 18, which may consist of a strip of adhesive tape wrapped tightly round the joint. The ends of each section are strengthened by steel bands 25. After driving a suitable number of sections in succession to form a pile, the aperture above is excavated, and stones 27 and concrete 26 are placed in it to form a seal, and is tamped; if water is pre. sent the materials may be lowered in containers, e.g. short cylinders of perforated zinc. The bore is then de-watered, and a cage of steel reinforcements i s lowered into it. The bore is then filled with concrete, which is allowed to set. The tie rods 12 are then withdrawn, and while being withdrawn are used for supplying grout under pressure for forming a coating round the pile and for permeating and consolidating the soil. The tie members 12 may be placed in passages in the walls ; they may be left in place, and may be supplemented by the ropes. When the pile is driven through soft ground to a harder stratum, the shoe 6 may be plugged with a weakly-cemented block of sand &c., which afterwards can be removed. The interior surfaces of the units 2 may be protected by a sheeting or coating, which may be removed.
