Abstract

Piles, driving.-A structure is underpinned by removing the soil down to the level of the slab footings of the existing piers 1, and then enclosing the footings in a grillage frame formed of girders 3, 5, which may be dowelled to the footings. The frame is then filled with, and embedded in, concrete 6, and a pit is dug between the piers and under the concrete. Pile tubes 7 in sectional lengths are next driven by an hydraulic jack 8, which bears on the grillage, each pile being subjected to a pressure in excess of its normal proportion of the permanent load. While this pressure is maintained on the pile, the interior thereof is excavated and filled with concrete; struts 14 are inserted and wedged against the grillage until the load is transferred from the jack to the pile. When all the piles have been driven and loaded in this manner, the pit is filled up with concrete to enclose the struts. A foundation for a building in course of erection may be formed in a similar manner.
