Abstract

430,366. Windscreen-cleaning devices. RAWLINSON, J. C., 1, Essex Court, Temple, London. Jan. 31, 1934, No. 3275. [Class 138 (i)] A device for cleaning windscreens and like windows of vehicles comprises a jet employed in conjunction with a source of liquid under pressure, the jet being spaced away from the windscreen and being supported by that part of the vehicle which lies in front of and below the lower edge of the windscreen, so that the liquid is projected at the screen. As shown, a cylinder 4 integral with a cylinder 10 is secured to a bulkhead 3 beneath the scuttle 1. The cylinder 4 is provided with a piston 6 on a rod 7 which is bent to project through the facia board 2, terminating in a knob 8. Three ports are provided in the cylinder 4, one connected by a pipe 19 to the interior of the cylinder 10, one connected by a pipe 20 through a valve 21 to the source of liquid supply, and one connected to a byepass 22. The cylinder 10 carries a plunger 11 with a rod 12 on which is adjustably mounted a box 14 containing a jet 13. The box is connected by a pipe 17 to a port 18 in the cylinder 10. An electric lamp 15A is provided in the box 14 for preventing freezing of the liquid. When the knob 8 is pulled, the piston 6 forces liquid from the cylinder 4 into the cylinder 10 and thereby the plunger is raised until it passes the port 18, whereupon liquid is forced through the jet on to the screen. The jet returns to its position below the scuttle when the knob 8 is pushed in. A lid 24 covers the opening in the scuttle when the jet is retracted. A flap 25 may be attached to the box to catch drips, the flap being fixed, or being hinged to close up during retraction, to protect the jet. The device may be employed with a windscreen-wiper. The Provisional Specification describes operating mechanism comprising three cylinders fitted with pistons, one of which is adapted to operate the washing liquid in a reservoir. To ordinary water for spraying may be added salt or ox-bile.
