[Class 19] [See also Group XXII] The invention relates to methods of securing bristles in toothbrushes and to tools for the purpose. The method allows the use of hard stocks, such as those made of pheno-formols, urea salts, bone, ivory, and the like. Bristles 5, Fig. 1, are secured by a wire loop 3 in a cylindrical hole with a conical bottom 1<a>. The ends of the fastener slide on the bottom, cross one another, and are sealed by a suitable cement 4 in a cylindrical recess 2 of smaller diameter than the recess. In a modification, the recess 2 is of opposite taper to the bottom 1<a> and serves as an additional hold on the ends of the fastener 5. In another modification, the hole 2 is of larger diameter, and the ends of the fastener may be made longer to fit the recess without the use of cement. In another modification, Fig. 4, the ends of the fastener are accommodated in a cylindrical hole 11 in the stock. In another modification, a fastener is used, the ends of which do not cross but engage a circular groove in the stock. In still another modification, Fig. 6, an anchor 14 is used with teeth 15 forced apart by a wedge 16, so as to engage grooves in the stock. The grooves are made by a tool, Fig. 7, consisting of a tubular member 19 split at 20 and a headed rod 22 with conical shoulders 23. The rool is mounted on a drilling machine and the parts 19 are forced apart by the shoulders 23. Where only one groove is necessary, a single tooth 25, Fig. 9, is used on a flexible stem 26, which is pressed outwards by a plunger 30 with a conical end engaging a conical shoulder on the member 26.
