Abstract
429,882. Rectifying alternating current. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 16, 1934, No. 33049. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1933. [Class 38 (ii)] In a rectifying arrangement comprising a transformer 3 and gaseous discharge rectifier 1 for supplying from an A.C. source 2 direct current through a smoothing circuit 7, 8, 9 to wireless apparatus, chokes 10 are inserted between the rectifier and transformer, the chokes and the rectifier are surrounded by an earthed metallic screen 11, and an earthed screen 12 is arranged between the primary and secondary windings of the transformer with a view to reducing the amplitude of spurious oscillations generated in the rectifier and preventing such oscillations from being transmitted to the associated apparatus. Fig. 1 shows the essential elements, and Fig. 3 shows a modification in which further provisions are made to meet conditions arising with ultra-sensitive apparatus. The provisions include chokes 37, 38 and condensers 39, 40 on the primary side of the transformer to prevent oscillations entering the supply network, a screen 36 between the secondary windings feeding the rectifier and additional secondaries 18, 19 feeding other elements of the wireless apparatus, chokes 41, 42 in the cathode heating supply leads, a screened low frequency choke 31 and a high frequency choke 32 in the output lead from the rectifier and an earthed screen 34 surrounding the leads adjacent the junction with the smoothing circuit.
