Abstract

429,852. Endless-track vehicles. FAY, S. E., 11, Christchurch Gardens, Epsom, Surrey. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5175. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (ii)] The body of an endless-track vehicle is formed as a troughshaped structure C so that the driver can support himself therein in a horizontal position while manipulating the vehicle and apparatus thereon such as a machine gun R, the cover or top S of the vehicle being only sufficiently high to protect the driver from hostile fire when in the lying position. A sling or other detachable seat may be provided in a hatch or covered opening so that the driver may use the sitting position temporarily. The driver lies on a mattress B, and padding T is provided above him. More than one person may be carried in a lying position on the vehicle. The hinged cover S is preferably cylindrical and made in halves S<1>. The tracks J pass over driving and idler sprockets H<1>, H<2> respectively, the sprockets H<1> being driven through differential gearing M3 by an internalcombustion engine L situated in a compartment shut off by a bulkhead K. The track rollers E rock about spring-supported axles D, or, alternatively, the spring suspension described in Specification 415,786 may be used. The idler sprockets H<2> are toothed so as to be driven by the tracks and are independently braked for steering by separate hand levers M2. The vehicle may be propelled by the driver by pedal mechanism, in addition to or alternatively to the engine. Alternatively, the driver may propel the vehicle by the engagement of his feet with the ground, a hole or holes being provided in the vehicle body for this purpose. Instead of the driver, explosives or stores may be carried on the vehicle, propulsion being effected by an electric motor controlled by wireless apparatus.
