Abstract

429,115. Gas fires. THORNTON, J. E., 8, Hill Street, Jersey, Channel Islands. Dec. 2, 1933, No. 33866. [Class 126] An incandescent fire heated by gaseous or vaporous fuel, and simulating a coal fire, comprises a bed B formed of one or more thick blocks of refractory material preferably having its upper surface moulded to represent small coal ; a refractory wall D at the rear having an upper portion forwardly-inclined at an angle of less than 90‹ to the bed B ; a plurality of hollow refractory shells A, shaped and coloured to represent pieces of coal in combustion, detachably supported on or integral with the bed B, and formed with rear openings a<2> to allow flames from their interiors to impinge laterally on the vertical part of the rear wall D ; together with bunsen burners C which project into the shells A. The back D and bed B are heated to incandescence in addition to the shells and, as shown in Fig. 6, apertures a<1> may be formed in the lower part of the shells for the emission of heat and light on to the surface of the bed B. The shells A may be provided with internal projections a<3>, Fig. 14; Fig. 6 shows a shell with a cone-shaped heat-accumulating block a<5> and with strengthening cross-ribs a<4>. The shells may be formed with hollow shanks fitting into holes b<1> in the bed B, Fig. 14, or hollow shanks b<2> on the bed, Fig. 16, may project into the shells, or other means for positioning the shells on the bed may be used. The bed or base B may, as shown in Fig. 13, be formed in sections connected by tongue and groove joints b or by rabeted joints. The back D may be formed with a flue passage D<3>, and, as shown in Fig. 16 with an internal-combustion chamber D<2> into which additional heating burners C deliver; an air-heating passage may be provided behind it. The burners C shown in Fig. 14 are provided with an annular discharge orifice formed between two dished members, and those in Fig. 16 with perforated globular heads. Specification 284,867, [Class 126], is referred to.
