Convention date, Nov. 4, 1933. [Class 37] Resistance layers for variable resistances are made by coating an insulating member 1 with a dispersion comprising a hardening resin and a conducting material followed by heating after removal of the dispersion medium to harden the resin, whereupon the surface 2 is smoothly ground. The grinding operation may be followed by reheating to increase the hardness of the resistance layer. Shellac or phenol-formaldehyde condensation products are specified as hardening resins, while the conducting material is preferably carbon in the form of graphite, although other materials, such as silver oxide, may be used. The insulating member 2 may be made of a fibrous material, such as paper, impregnated with a hardening resin. The movable contact 7, which may be of spherical shape, is mounted on a flexible arm secured to an insulating disc 8 rotatable by means of a knob 10. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 409,740.
