Abstract
429,051. Baling presses. CAMCO (MACHINERY), Ltd., and HARPER, E. C., 63, Farringdon Street, London. Jan. 18, 1934, No. 1840. [Class 94 (i)] A baling-press comprises a press-box to open at the top and having a hinged door 11 adapted to be closed by a pivotal clamping bar 12. The platen 13 is carried by a column 17 formed with a rack 17a and embraced by a bearing collar 18 pivoted at 19. For filling, the platen and its associated parts are swung into the open position shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, and are then turned back into the operative position. Compression is effected by means of a handoperated lever 32 on a shaft 22 carrying a pinion 24, Fig. 4, engaging the rack 17a and arranged between the parts of the bearing collar 18, a pawl 25 preventing retrogression. The action is continued by means of a hand lever 36 having a ratchet 35 on the shaft 22 engaged by a pawl 37 on the lever. The shaft 22 is carried by open bearings 23 and is held in position during compression by locking hooks 27 pivoted at 28. Each hook comprises a plate formed with a recess to embrace the shaft 22, and secured to levers 30, 31. The lever 30 is formed with a counterweight 33, and the lever 31 with a handle 31a. When the platen is swung downwards, the shaft 22 engages the upper sloping parts of the hooks and swings it aside into the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3, after which it returns to the locking position under the action of the weight. At the completion of the compressing movement, the door 11 is opened, ties are passed through slots 14 and guides 15, 16 and secured, the pawl 25 is tripped and the platen raised by reverse movement of the handle 32, and the hooks 27 are released by means of the handle 31a to enable the platen to be turned to the inoperative position. The hooks may be automatically released when the platen reaches the upper limit of its travel, and may be spring-loaded or biassed to cause them to assume an inoperative position.
