[Class 40 (v)] A directional aerial for use in navigation work at an aerodrome consists of a bent radiating dipole L, Fig. 4 backed by a similar reflecting dipole L1. The two are housed in a sunken conduit, provided with side-screens P, and an overhead grating G. Or the aerial 21, Fig. 6, may be backed by a reflector 22, with side screens 20, 23A, the whole being supported on a mobile carrier 23 containing the H.F. transmitting gear. The fixed and mobile beacons may be used, alone or in combination to provide the usual runway-indicator and boundary-markers used to assist aviators to land at an aerodrome. Fig. 8 shows a sunken aerial 24 of the same type with an adjustable overhead grating 26 for controlling the intensity and glide angle of a landing beam.
