Abstract

428,757. Sharpening razors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Sept. 19, 1934, No. 26932. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1933. [Class 60] A razor-blade sharpening- machine driven by an electric motor comprises a plate 10 having pivoted, in upstanding portions 19 thereof, casings 16, 37 respectively carrying pairs of rollers 11, 12 and 13, 14 geared together, the lower rollers 11, 13 being driven by a worm 48 on the spindle 43 of the armature 42 of an electric motor 41 mounted beneath the plate 10. Each roller has therein a spiral groove 31 in which is a stropping member 23 having its ends entering holes in the roller body and locked in position by bushings 35, 36 inserted in the bore of the roller, and the spindles 17 of the upper rollers are journalled in oval openings in the casings 16, 37 and the pairs of rollers are pressed together by springs 26. The casings 16, 37 are normally separated by a spring 40, and are moved to engage a blade mounted on tapered pins 53, 54 by cams 51, 52 on a lid 50 hinged to a housing 49 containing the motor &c., and the inward pivotal movement of the casing 16 causes, through a cam surface 16<1> on the casing and a pin 58, movement of a contact 56 to engage a contact 55 to start the motor. In order to time the operation of the sharpener, contacts 59, 60 are provided, the contact 59 being moved up to contact 60 when the casing 37 moves to the inoperative position, and latched in the closed position by a bimetallic strip 63 surrounded by a heating-coil 64 in the circuit of the motor. When the motor has run for a sufficient time, the strip 63 moves and allows the contacts 59, 60 to separate ; the contacts will not be latched again until the strip has moved back to its normal position, thus preventing overheating of the motor.
