Abstract
428,211. Compound fabrics ; coating webs; coated fabrics. MORTON, J., Tuethur, Carlisle. Oct. 2, 1933, No. 27003. [Class 140] Pliable compound fabrics suitable for clothing, upholstery, &c., are made by applying adhesive by a roller at spaced areas on a sheet of textile material, and pressing the sheet by means of rollers into permanent attachment with another sheet of textile material. Adhesive may be applied by a roller at spaced areas on both sides of a sheet of textile material, and sheets of textile material attached to both sides by pressure between rollers, or adhesive may be applied at spaced areas on the inner faces of two sheets of textile material and these sheets attached to an intermediate sheet of textile material. Knitted, woven, or openwork fabrics of wool, silk, cotton, hemp, jute, coir, &c., may be used, and one layer may consist of textile threads arranged side by side. A flexible permanent cement is used such as rubber latex or a rubber mixture with vulcanizing and filling additions, or cellulose derivative or artificial resin solutions, and may be applied in lines, stripes, dots, patches, &c., which may form a design. The adhesive may be coloured, and may be applied thickly so as to embed the threads of the textile layer and form an embossed or relief effect. The adhesive-applying roller may be grooved, fluted, or engraved in relief or intaglio. The compound fabric may be varnished with a natural or synthetic resin or a cellulose derivative in solution. A fabric web A from a roll 20, Fig. 1, is printed at spaced areas with adhesive while passing around an impression cylinder 23 provided with a blanket 231 by a roller 24 supplied with adhesive from a trough 26 by a roller 25 and cleaned by scrapers 27, 28, and is united between pressure rollers 29, 30 to a fabric web B from roll 21, the compound fabric passing around a heating drum 31 before being wound up at 22. Alternatively, Fig. 14, the adhesive may be supplied from a trough 45 by a roll 44 and an endless band 42 travelling around pulleys 43 to spaced projections 41 on a roller 40, the fabric A from roll 20 receiving the adhesive from the projections 41. The Provisional Specification describes also fabrics comprising a sheet of openwork material such as net or side-by-side threads embedded in a layer of adhesive coated on a backing material. The resulting fabric may be varnished.
