Abstract

428,188. Centrifugal machines. BERGEDORFER EISENWERK AKT.-GES. ASTRAWERKE, Bergedorf, Hamburg, Germany. Oct. 16, 1934, Nos. 29573 and 29574. Convention dates, Dec. 20, 1933, and March 17, 1934. [Class 23] To prevent clogging from causing damage in a centrifuge 1 with a mechanical conveying device 5 for the separated solids, a regulating device is brought into action when the conveying device is subjected to an increased resistance. The machine is driven by the belt 15 and the conveyer 5 rotates at a slightly different speed from the drum 1, to carry the solids to the peripheral openings 3. Both parts 1, 5 are geared to the shaft 8 so that it is stationary while the centrifuge is running normally, but when clogging occurs the conveyer slows up and the shaft 8 rotates. This rotates the shaft 10, and lowers the rod 12 against the action of the spring 13. A collar 16 on the rod 12 then actuates a valve 17 to reduce or stop the supply of material to the centrifuge, and if the shaft 8 continues to rotate the collar operates a second valve 18 to supply a flushing liquid to the drum. The connection between the conveyer 5 and its shaft 6 may consist of a transverse pin 23 of such dimensions that it breaks when the torque on the shaft exceeds a given value. In a modification connecting pins are arranged parallel to the axis. In another modification the shaft 38, Fig. 5 is coupled to the shaft 8, and carries a wheel 39 provided with a pivoted lever 41 normally held by a spring 43 against a pin 42. In this position the small wheel 45 on the lever engages one of the arms 44 on the shaft 38. The wheel 39 is held by the cable 46 attached to the spring balance 47. As long as the torque of the shaft 38 is normal the parts remain undisturbed, but if it increases sufficiently the arm 44 moves the lever 41 in a counter clockwise direction to the disengaged position in which the shafts 8, 38 are uncoupled. The form of coupling shown in Fig. 5, may be used to connect the shaft 8 to a braking device, and a similar coupling may be arranged between the conveyer 5 and its driving means.
