Application filed April 27, 1322. Serial No. 556,999.
This invention relates to improvements in centrifugal extractors, and more particularly, to'timing devices therefor.
The objects of this-invention are to prot vide a centrifugal extractor with improved means for automatically stopping operation of the same at a predetermined time; more particularly to provide improved means for automatically cutting out the electric drivto ing motor and at the same time applying a braking action so as toautomatically stop the rotation of the basket of the extractor.
It is a further object of this invention to provide ihiproved means tor eitherautomati- 1N3 cally or manually actuating the-means for stopping the operation of the extractor; and
also to provide such an automatic stopping device that can be set for any length out operation desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved extractor including raking means for the rotatable extractor member, driving or operating means therefor, a latching means for holding the' brake at relieved and rendering the driving means efiective, together with means operatable by asinglemanipulation or a single operator operated member for simultaneously controlling or adecting two or more of the three to parts stated, to wit, the brake, the driving means and the latching means.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description and claims when considered together with the drawings.
Fig. l is a side elevation of a centrifugal extractor embodying my timing device; 2 is a transverse section oit'the machine on line 2--2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4c is a section on line 4-4, of Figs. 6, 7 and 8; Fig. 5 is a section on line 5--5, of Figs. 6 and 7; Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66, out Figs. d and 5; Fig. 7 shows in front elevation the dial ot the timing mechanism partly broken away; Fi 8 is a section on the line 8-8,ot Figs. 4 and 7 Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 9-9 of Fi 2; Fig. 10 is a section on line 10-l0 of ig. 1; and Fig. 11 is a diagram of the electric circuit.
The casing 1 of the centrifugal extractor encloses a rotatable basket of the usual type which is mounted for rotation upon the spindle 3 provided at its lower end with the ulley t for operation by the belt 5, the elt hit provided upon the lower end of the latch being driven from the pulley 3 of the electric motor 7. The motor is suitably mounted uponthe bracket 8 on the side or the extractor casing and supporting frame.
The brake lever 9 is pivotally mounted at 10upon the base of the machine frame and is provided with the brake shoe 11 which is adapted to engage the pulley 4 upon depression of the treadle end 12 of the lever. The release treadle 13 forms one arm of the bellcrank lever which is pivotally mounted at 14 upon the bracket 20 supported'upon the base of the machine while theother arm of the bell crank lever is indicated at 15 and is formed with a forked end portion 16 for engagement with a pin 17 on the side of the arm 18. The one end of the arm l8'is tired to the shaft 19 which is rockably mounted at its two end portions upon the brackets 20 provided on the base portion of the machine. Fixed also u on the shaft 19 isthe arm-21, the other en of which is pivotally connected at 22 with the 'clevis 23. Secured within the lowerend or theclevis 23 is the rod or stem 24 which is provided upon its lower end with a ball 25,for engagement in the socket 26 carried by the upper face of the treadle 12. Thus there is provided a positive operative connection. between the treadle 13 and the arm 18 as well as the brake lever 9 through the connections just described.
The electric circuit through the motor 7 includes the normally open switch 27 provided within the casing 28 upon the inner wall of which there is also provided the guide block 29. The casing 28 is suitably mounted upon the under part of the casin l as in dicated in the drawing. The switch 27 is controlled by means of the stem 30 which extends through the swivel block 31 and has as a shoulder 32 for engagement therewith. The swivel block 31 is mounted in the arm 13 and upon elevation of the arm so as to cause the swivel block 31 to engage the shoulder 32, the stem 30 will be raised so as to close the switch 27. i v
The other end of the arm 18 is pivotally connected with the link. 33, the other endv of this link being pivoted to the clevis 3d gill stem 35 which extends upwardly through the bracket arms 36 and 37. Suitably mounted upon the bracket 38 on the wall 0t the casing 1 T have provided the casing'39 which encloses the timing mechanism which Ml 'constitutes the main feature of my present invention. The shaft 40 is suitably mounted for'rotation within the casing 39 and has loosely mounted upon its outer end' portion the hub 41 upon which there is fixed the dial '42. The shaft 40 has a collar 43 which constitutes an abutment for one end of the spring 44 while the other end thereof abiits against the bottom'of a cut-out port-ion in driving connection for the dial 42 when the the hub 41, as clearly shown in Fig. 4; so that the hub 41 with the dial 42 can be pulled outwardly against the tension of the spring 44 for the purpose of setting the same as will later appear.
The inner end portion of the hub 41 is provided with the clutch face 45 for engagement with the companion clutch member 46 fixedly mounted upon the shaft 40. The shaft 40 is driven from the motor 7 through the drive connection 47 betweenthe rotor of the motor and the flexible shaft 48 which in turn drives the shaft 49. The worm 50 fixed upon the shaft 49 in turn drives the gear 51 which is fixed upon the shaft 52 suitably mounted in the casing 39. The shaft 52 has fixedly mounted thereupon the pinion 53 meshing with the gear 54 fixed upon the shaft 55 which shaft has fixed thereon the worm 56 meshing with the gear 57. Gear 57 being fixedly mounted upon the shaft 40 provides clutch members 45 and 46 are normally held in engagement by the spring 44.
The latch stem 35 is provided with the shoulder 58 for supporting engagement by the tooth 59 ofthe latch member 60 which extends through the casing 39. The spring 61 normally forces the .latch 60 toward engageinent with the latch stem 35 but may be withdrawn from such engagement by operation of the lever arm 62 pivoted in the casin and provided at its one end with the for 63 for engagement with the pin 64 provided in the latch- 60. The lever or trip arm 62 extends outwardly through an enlar ed opening in the casing 39 so as to exten in the path of the trip member 65 provided upon the dial 42. Thus it will be seen that upon ulling out the hub 41 and turning the dia 42 to the left or in counter-clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 7, the device can be set for any desired length of operation by bringin any number marked upon the face of the ial, corresponding to the number of minutes of operation desired, to a point opposite the index 66 provided upon the casing 39. Such movement of the dial in a counterclockwise direction will move the trip 65 awa from the lever 62, but upon operation oft 1e machine and the rotation of the dial 42 in a clockwise direction through the train of gears above described, the tri 65 will at the termination of the period or which the device is set arrive at the position in'- dicated in Fig. 7 so as to trip the lever 62 and withdraw the latch 60 against the. tension of thespring 61. In this Way there is et'- fected the release of the latch stem 35 with the simultaneous lowering of the arm 18 so as to permit stem 30; to lower and open the switch 27 and the brake 11 is applied through the connections already described. I Thus when it is desired to operate the machine, the timing mechanism will be set for the period of operation desired, the latch stem 35 will be raised by depression of treadle 13 and held in such position by engagement of the latch 60, the switch 27 being closed and the brake being released by. the
same manipulation. Should it be desired during the operation of the machine and before expiration of the time for which the device is'set, to stop the machine, this may be done by the operator-himself tripping the lever 62 so as to release the latch 60 to permit breaking of the circuit through the motor as well as the application of the brake in the manner above described. Should, however, the machine be permitted to run throughout the entire period for which-the timing device is set, the trip 65 willeventually engage the lever 62 so as to automatically release the latch stem, cut out the motor and stoprotation of the basket.
What I claim is:
