Be it known that I, WALTER E. RATHBUN, a citizen of the United States, .residing at Milan,
and useful Improvements in Drives for Cream-Separators; of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has to do with certain improvements in driving mechanism particularly for use in driving centrifugal cream separators. The features of the present invention are very well adapted for use inconnection with cream separator drives of the type disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,281,418, issued't'o me under date of October-"15, 1918. Inorder that the featuresof the present invention may. be moreeasily understoodfand their mode ofoperation more readily explained,-

Referring first to Fig. 1, the separator in the county of Rock Island and' State of Illinois, have invented certain new therein indicated is designated in its entirety by the numeral 10. . I have, therefore, provided means for effecting a driving connection between the pulley 24 and the shaft 20 when it is desired to drive the separator by power and for properly locking the shaft 20 against rotation with respect to the handle 13 when it is desired to drive by hand. scribe these menas more in detail, and for this purpose reference may be had particularly to Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7.
A collar 28 is secured to the shaft 20 as by means of a pin 29, the pulley 24 being rotatably mounted on the end portion of the shaft 20, and said end portion may be provided with an enlarged head 30 for retaining the pulley 24 in position thereon. The shaft 20 extends clean'through the handle 13 within which it is journaled and through the pinion 21, and a nut 31 on its inner end serves to retain all of the elements in position on the shaft 20.
An arcuate slot 32 is provided on the outer face of the collar 28, and a pin 33 is slidably mounted within a recess or pocket in the hub of the pulley 24 and is normally spring-pressed outwardly by a spring 34 insaid pocket. One end of the slot 32 is slanted or beveled, so that the shaft 20 may, in some cases, run ahead of the ulley 24, but upon driving the pulley 24 in t e normal driving direction, the pin 33 will engage the other end of the slot and drive the collar 28.
Another pin 35 is slidably mounted in a pocket in the hub portion of the handle 13, and this pin is normally spring-pressed outwardly by means of a spring 36. An arcuate slot 37 is provided in the back face of the collar 28, into which slot the pin 35is normally projectedby means of the spring 36. One end of the slot 37 is beveled or slanted in such fashion that the shaft 20 and collar 28 may run ahead of the handle 13 when the machine is being power driven, but the arrangement is such that when driving by hand the pin 35 will engage the other end of the slot 37 so as to effect a driving connection and prevent the shaft 20 from rotating in the journal or bearing in the handle 13.
It will be evident that in the normal power drive by the use of the pulley 24, the collar 28 will continue to run ahead of the pin 35, so that each time the pulley 24 completed a rotation the pin 35 would naturally snap back into the slot 37 with a clicking noise. I will now de-- operation, I have provided means whereby the in 3 may be temporarily disengaged from the collar 28 and locked into such disengaged position. This means comprises a slot 38 through which extends a finger piece 39 from the pin 35, and the inner end ofsaid slot 38 is hooked as at 40 to accommodate the handle 39 when the pin 35 has been retracted. By the construction described I effect, a ratchet mechanism which serves adequately to fulfil all the requirements of this invention.
In certain constructions now in common use the hand crank 13 is attached to one end of the drive shaft While the gear 18 and pinion 21 are located at its opposite end, but my invention is equally adaptable to such a construction without substantial modification. .While I have herein shown and described only certain embodiments of the features of my present invention, still it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the said features except as I may do so in the claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with the operating mechanism of a cream separator including an operating shaft, of a main gear drivingly connected to said shaft, a crank arm pivotally mounted with respect to the shaft, a pinion shaft journaled in the crank arm, a pinion on the pinion shaft drivingly engaging the main gear, a collar drivingly'secured to the pinion shaft, a pulley journaled on the pinion shaft adjacent to one face of the collar, a ratchet and pin connection between the pulley and collar permitting the pinion shaft and collar to run ahead of the pulley but insuring a driving connection from the pulley to the pinion shaft when the pulley tends to run ahead of the pinion shaft, and a pin and ratchet connection between the other face of the collar and the crank arm permitting the collar and pinion shaft to run ahead of the crank arm, but preventing a retrogressive movement between" these parts, substantially as described. 2. The combination with the operating mechanism of a cream separator including a driving shaft, of a crank arm pivotally mounted concentrically with respect to the driving shaft, a pinion shaft journaled in the crank arm, a gear and pinion connection between the pinion shaft and the driving shaft, a collar secured to the pinion shaft, a pulley journaled on the pinion shaft adjacent to one face of said collar," means in conjunction with the collar and pulley permitting the pinion shaft and collar to run ahead of the pulley, but insuring a driving connection from the pulley to the collar and pinion shaft in the same direction, and means in conjunction with the collar and crank arm permitting the pinion shaft" and collar to run ahead of the crank arm, but preventing a retrogressive movement between these parts, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the operating mechanism of a cream separator including a driving shaft, of a crank arm pivotally mounted with respect to the driving shaft, a pinion shaft journaled in the crank arm, a pinion and gear connection between the pinion shaft and the driving shaft, a pulley journaled on the pinion shaft, means in conjunction with the pulley and pinion shaft permitting the pinion shaft to run ahead of the pulley but insuring a driving connection from the pulley to the pinion shaft in the same direction, and means in conjunction with the pinion shaft and crank arm permitting the pinion shaft to run ahead of the crank arm, but preventing retrogressive movement between these parts, substantially as described.
4:. The combination with the operating mechanism of a cream separator including a driving shaft and a pinion shaft, of a crank arm pivotally mounted with respect to the driving shaft, a pinion and gear connection between the pinion shaft and the driving shaft, a pulley on the pinion shaft, and means in conjunction with the pinion shaft and pulley permitting the pinion shaft to .run ahead of the pulley but insuring a driving connection from the pulley to the pinion shaft, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the operating mechanism of a cream separator, including a driving shaft and a pinion shaft, of a crank arm operatively mounted with respect to the driving shaft, a driving connection between the pinion shaft and the driving shaft, a pulley on the pinion shaft, and means associated with the pinion shaft and pulley permitting the former to run ahead of the latter but insuring the driving connection from the latter to the former, substantially as described.
