[Class 109] [See also Groups IX and VIII] A stranding, closing, or corelapping machine, is provided with a movable feeler mounted on the holder from which the yarn &c. is unwound or the rotating part carrying it and restrained from outward movement by the inward pressure of one or more coils of the material on the holder so that it becomes released before the whole of the coils is exhausted and actuates a stop motion to stop the machine. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the bobbin 1 of a stranding machine is formed with an aperture 4 through which the nose 12 of the feeler 10 can move when the coils 3, normally holding the feeler depressed against the action of a spring 11, are unwound. The feeler is pivoted in an extension 7 formed on the flange 6 of the bobbin but it may be pivoted in one of the flanges ; the nose may be formed at any point along the length of the bobbin so that the feeler is released when the coils remaining on the bobbin have fallen to any desired number. The movement of the nose 12 allows the end of the feeler to project into the path of the head 26 of a spring-pressed pin 24 mounted in the cradle 14 of the machine and having an end 23 normally engaging the larger part of a key-hole slot in a spring- controlled plate 22 slidably mounted on the cradle ; the feeler depresses the pin 24 which allows the plate 22 to slide and cause the end 35 of a rod 18 on the plate to actuate the spring-pressed pin 31 of a similar pin and slide device 27 mounted on one of the brackets 21 of the rotary frame 17 of the machine, the rod 29 of the device 27 actuating the switch 37 of the electric drive of the machine or controlling an automatic belt-shifting motion or a clutch or disengageable coupling.
