Abstract

426,433. Knitting-machines. WESTON, SHIPLEY, & WESTON, Ltd., and SHIPLEY, A. H., 72, Rutland Street, Leicester. Jan. 1, 1934, No. 61. [Class 74 (ii)] In a knitting-machine of the rotary needle cylinder type two horizontally disposed rollers for drawing off the fabric are carried in bearing blocks 2 which slide vertically on pins 3 mounted in a ring 4 attached to a bevel gear. Springs 8 encircle the pins and press on the blocks 2. Pinions 9, 9 rotating on pins &c., 10, 10 and carried by the blocks, drive the rollers 1, which may rotate on axles 11. Springs 13 in the form of resilient arms tending to spring inwards pass through the adjacent ends of the axles 11 and are secured by clamping plates and bearing screws 14, 15. The blocks are formed with slots 12 which receive the ends of the axles. The springs 13 acting on these ends hold one roller against the other while allowing passage of fabric. The pinions 9, 9 drive gears 18 on the rollers and also mesh with a circular rack 19 resting on a friction ring 20 carried by part of the framing. The ring is normally prevented from moving round with the rack &c., by the engagement of pins 31, 32 which do not, however, prevent movement in the opposite direction, during heel and toe work. Discs 23, 23, 25, 25 or other devices serve to guard the fabric from the gears. The discs 23, 23a run on a track 24 and also serve to hold the rack 19 down on the ring 20. When there is little or no tension on the fabric, the pressure of the revolving parts prevents the rack from rotating. The pinions gearing therewith thus rotate as they revolve, rotate the rollers and start to pull the fabric down at a maximum rate. As the fabric becomes tensioned and the rollers tend to climb up it the pressure on the friction ring 20 is reduced until the rack can be driven round by the pinions, the feed of the rollers being correspondingly reduced.
