[Class 108 (iii)] [See also Groups XX and XIX] An instrument, such as a magnetic compass is supported by a metallic bellows in order to minimize the effect of vibrations. As shown, a compass bowl 6 is attached at the bottom to the lower end of a metallic bellows 9, attached at its upper end to an outer casing 8. In order to damp the vibrations a layer of felt 18 is secured between the edges of bellows and the casing 8 and the motion of the bellows is used to force air through a restricted orifice 41. The size of the orifice may be varied to control the damping. In a modification the bellows are damped by felt washers arranged between the convolutions.
