Abstract

426,010. Vehicle collision-guards; brakes. TENNANT, T. M., 84, Skares, Cumnock, Ayrshire. Oct. 19, 1933, No. 28922. [Class 103 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] A bumper is supported at one end of a vehicle frame by a shockabsorbing spring mounting which is connected by linkage with a second shock-absorber in such a manner that both are operated simultaneously when the bumper is struck, the spring - mounting comprising one or more spiral springs of frusto - conical form when in the normal extended position and of volute form when compressed. The second shockabsorber may form a similar spring mounting for a second bumper at the other end of the vehicle. As shown, front and rear double-bar bumpers, each comprising bars 3 secured to flanged discs 12<1> which normally are separated from similar discs 12<2> on the frame by frusto-conical springs 11, are each slidably supported by three rods 4, 4, 5 connected by a cross-bar 9, the rods 4 being also pivotally connected by links 6 to double-arm cranks 7 on a cross-shaft 8. One of the cranks 7 is connected by links 13 to arms 14 on the front and rear brake-shafts 15, 16 so that when a bumper is struck the brakes are applied and are locked by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 21, 22, the pawl 22 of which is retractable by a foot-pedal 23. The brakes may also be applied against the action of the springs 11 by a manuallyoperable lever 24 on the cross-shaft 8. Alternatively, the lever 24 may be operated by a spring, (not shown), normally held inoperative by a trigger device roleasable by a foot-pedal.
