[Class 103 (ii).] A vehicle life-guard comprises an extensible trellis 16, 17 normally held compact against a supporting-bar 21 by the hooked ends 12 of two vertical levers 10 engaging a shaft 23 fixed to the lowest cross-bar 16 of the trellis, the levers 10 being pivoted at 11 to brackets 9 fixed to the vehicle bumper 2 and supporting at their upper ends a horizontal buffer bar 14 adjustably pressed forwardly by leaf-springs 15, so that when the bar 14 is struck or is pulled rearwardly by a cable 45 connected to a lever 50 operable by the driver, the levers 10 are moved clockwise, Fig. 4, to release the hooks 12 from the shaft 23 and the trellis drops under the combined action of gravity and springs 29. The bar 21 is fixed to supports 22 secured to the bumper 2 and having inverted U-shaped ends which guide the trellis to its compact position. To obtain rapid expansion of the trellis and to maintain its rigidity when expanded, two arms 25 are provided each pivoted at 26 to one of the supports 22 and connected at its upper end to one of the springs 29, its lower end being slotted at 21 to engage a pin 28 on the lowest bar 16 of the trellis. An adjusting-screw 31 contacting with the stud 28 permits adjustment of the distance through which the trellis drops. To prevent obstacles from striking the upper parts of the vehicle a bar 32 is supported above the bar 14 by arms 33 pivoted to the brackets 9 and pressed forwardly by compression springs 34. Rubber-covered rollers 24 on the bar 23 prevent the trellis when fully extended from contacting with the gr ound.
