425,460. Variable speed friction gearing. SKODA WORKS, PLZEN, 37, Jungmannova, and GOTZ, F., 299, Na Zvahove, Hlubocepy, both in Prague. Sept. 25, 1934, No. 27541. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXV] Variable-speed and reversing friction gearing comprises a driving-shaft 2 with a convex or dome-shaped friction element 3 at each end, each element 3 being thrust outwardly by spring pressure into engagement with a friction surface 13, Fig. 3, on the interior of a bell-shaped driven member 5. The speed is varied in both directions by tilting the shaft 2 and driving motor 1 about fixed pivots 8 so that zones of different sizes of the domes 3 are operative. Control may be effected by a hand lever 7. To compensate for wear of the surface 13, the bell may be adjusted axially. A section of one of the domes 3 appears in Fig. 5, not shown. In Fig. 9 is shown the incorporation of an electric driving motor 27 with a friction clutch 29 adapted to slip on excessive load.
