425,209. Casting composite containers. SCHMELLER, J., 2325, Riverside Drive, Lakewood, Ohio, U.S.A. Aug. 20, 1934, No. 24026. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1933. [Class 83 (i)] Cores; moulding processes.-In making a metal container such as an aluminium barrel, the metal forming the wall is cast about the margins of a preformed closure head to form an integral structure therewith. One form of mould, Fig. 2, has separable metal sections hinged about a vertical bar 8 which is held by a bracket 6 secured to a base plate 2. The upper and lower parts of the mould meet off the centre line of the barrel so as not to interfere with the bung-hole core 48 ; molten metal is fed down the sinuous sprues 29 into the runner cavity 32 and then through the narrow broken gate openings 33, passageways 34 feed metal to form the barrel end and risers 28 lead away from this end. The preformed closure head 70, Figs. 5 and 7, having a beaded edge 71 for interlocking with the cast body portion, is first inserted in an inverted core-box half and properly positioned by a metal core-print 75 in the form of a spoked wheel, sand is then rammed through the spokes and the core box-half turned into the upright position shown. A boss in the core-print is screwed to take the end of an arbor 85 which is held central by a guide bar 92 while the core is being rammed with sand, finally the upper part of the core-box is placed in position, filled with sand and the upper end of the core shaped by an annular sweep 63 which rotates on rollers 66. The core may be lifted and placed in the mould by means of a handle 88 on the arbor, the latter then being removed and the space in the core filled with sand, the mould is completed when the bevelled bakedsand core-piece 26 is placed in position. A similar core may be used with a green sand mould, Fig. 10, the sprues are modified in this form and the narrowgate 131 may be continuous or broken ; the baked sand core 125 which forms the outside of the end-piece of the barrel may be held in position by vertical and horizontal wires 126, 127 respectively. Two preformed heads may be used and only the body portion of the barrel need be formed in the casting cavity.
