Abstract

424,594. Smoke detectors. FOAMITE FIREFOAM, Ltd., and GILBERT, V. G. W., 55, Great Marlborough Street, London. Sept. 18, 1933, No. 25760. [Class 47 (i)] In a smoke-pipe system for detecting incipient fire at any of a number of places, a stream of atmosphere drawn by a fan through each smoke-pipe 5 is discharged diagonally across an individual inspection chamber 1. A beam of light L is projected across each chamber to intersect the stream of atmosphere a in a vertical plane which includes the line of sight from the inspection window 2 of the chamber. All the chambers are arranged in a common casing, and each chamber consists of a casting comprising inlet and outlet conduits c<1>, c<2>. The inlet and outlet i and l and the light opening o are formed with inwardly projecting flanges, and a similar light-screening flange is provided on the wall 1<c> of the chamber opposite to the light opening. Light from a common source 3 is distributed to the several chambers by mirrors 4. The streams of atmosphere discharged from the chambers 1 by the pipes 6 are passed successively to a photo-electric detector and alarm by means of a rotary conduit, u, Fig. 4, which is brought into register successively with the ports p to which the pipes 6 are connected, the ports normally opening into a space s connected to the suction fan by a pipe d. The detector unit, not shown, is arranged in the byepass g, n.
