[Class 100 (iv)] [See also Group XIX] Record-controlled driving-mechanism; typebar actions.-Mechanism of the kind in which a perforated card is held in position for being read by a number of rows of sensing-elements comprises (1) means co-operating directly with the card for feeding and arresting the card in positions for successively reading a number of fields ; (ii) sensing-elements arranged to effect direct selection of combination bars which are read by auxiliary sensing-elements adapted to determine the position of type-carriers ; and (iii) the provision of the type-carriers for printing letters and numerals under control of auxiliary sensing-elements for combination bars which are set under control of sensing elements for the card. The mechanism shown in Fig. 2 comprises type-bars 38 for printing addresses on envelopes &c. 43 which are fed one at a time on to a platen 27 by means of a picker 44. The platen is turned step-by-step to space the lines of the address by means of a reciprocating rack which engages a one-way pinion on the platen and is connected to a cam-operated lever. One of the lobes of the cam is increased in height in order to effect a greater movement of the platen, and thereby eject the envelope, after the last line is printed. The card, Fig. 10, has three fields, representing the name &c., and each field is perforated on a five - point code to represent letters and numerals, odd and even numerals being represented by a single and double perforation respectively. The card may have side bands representing additional information. A card, ejected from a magazine 7 by means of a picker 22, is fed through a sensing-chamber 35 by means of feed-rollers 32, and is arrested in successive field-positions by direct engagement with steps on a rocking stop-arm 24 operated by a cam on the picker-shaft 21. Each field is read by pins in a sensing-box 13, the reading being transferred directly to apertured combination-bars 36 which are read by auxiliary sensing-pins 37 in a reciprocating pin-box 17. On each reading, one pin 37 in each column is permitted to pass through aligned apertures in the associated combination bars, and serves to arrest differentially the corresponding type-bar 38.
