[Class 106 (iii)] The speed of a motor vehicle is indicated, a maximum speed indication or alarm is given, odomoters, both non-adjustable and trip, are operated, and records of the polar diagram type are made of the instantaneous speed, average speed and running times, by means of an apparatus in which the front part or cover 1, Fig. 5, is hinged to the back part 3, Fig. 2, and carries a trip odometer and a record card secured to a disc rotated by a clock, the rest of the mechanism being carried by the back part. The main vertical driving shaft 6 rotates through gearing 7, 8, the shaft 9 of a centrifugal speed indicator in which a rack 16 is adjusted longitudinally along the shaft according to the speed. The rack 16 operates gear members mounted on the axis 18 so as to adjust the pointer 22 over the dial. One of these gear members adjusts vertically a slide 36 carrying a spring arm 33 with a stylus 31 which traces on the record card a record of the speed at any time. To warn the driver when a predetermined speed is attained, the dial is illuminated or some change in the character of the illumination, such as a colour change, is brought about by a disc which is mounted on the axis 18 and closes a spring contact 25 so as to complete or vary circuits through lamps behind the dial. This disc 28, Fig. 3, is adjustably mounted on a gear member associated with the speed indicator and is formed with a wedge-shaped part b which directly actuates the spring contact 25 at a given speed. An audible signal may be given. The disc may be reversed so that the part b is disengaged from the contact 25 when a given speed is attained. The running time or rest and motion record is made by a stylus 44 carried by a spring arm on a lever 41 pivoted at 40 and carrying a weight 39 which vibrates between stops 42, 43 when the vehicle is in motion. A thick line is then traced on the rotating record card. A record of running distance against time is made by a stylus 49 in the form of a zig-zag line on the rotating card, the stylus being carried by the end of a lever which is oscillated by a cam driven from the main driving shaft 6 through a train of gearing. An odometer 45 is also driven from the shaft 6 through the same gearing. The trip odometer carried by the cover 1 is driven, when the cover is closed, by an Oldhams coupling and a coupling member 52 geared to the main driving shaft 6. The shaft 6 may be driven from the side or rear through worm or bevel gearing enclosed in an additional casing bolted to the main casing.
