Abstract
423,615. Railway vehicles; vibrationdampers. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd., and HAWORTH, H. F., Hough Lane, Leyland, Lancashire. Sept. 20,1933,No. 25993. [Classes 103 (vi) and 108 (iii)] Lateral oscillatory movements of a railway or tramway vehicle axle or body are minimized by mounting on the same an inertia vibrationdamper comprising a mass 1 having a limited transverse movement relative to the axle or body, means such as springs 5 for restoring the mass to a central position, and means for damping the oscillations of the mass. In the construction shown the mass 1 is mounted for movement relatively to the axle 2 in a fluidtight casing 4 filled with oil and secured to the axle. Movement of the mass 1 within the casing is heavily damped by the restricted flow of oil permitted around the mass and, if desired, through passages 6 in the latter. Alternatively, the casing 4 may be massive and free on the axle, and a piston within it secured to the axle, while the damping may be effected by solid instead of fluid friction. An inertia vibration-damper may similarly be mounted on the vehicle body.
