Abstract
Rubber is rendered capable of adhering to itself but not appreciably to other surfaces for use in surgical bandages and other wrappings by dissolving out most of the gummy constituents, and heating until it becomes tacky. Numerous methods are described of carrying out the process. The rubber may be treated with a ketone, such as a mixture of water and at least 25 per cent acetone. This may also serve as a vehicle for the introduction of antiseptics, dyes, pigments or stabilizers. After extraction, the rubber is heated for about an hour at 65-90 DEG C. Bandages may be made by extracting the resins from a strip of cr<\>zepe or the like, rolling the strip with an interlayer, packaging the roll, and heating the packet. Stretch may be reduced by an interposed textile, wire gauze &c. layer, which may be inserted at any stage of the process. Fabrics may be impregnated, or threads may be coated with a rubber dispersion, and after coagulation, treated by the process. The resins may be extracted from latex before coagulation. British Specification 397,694 and U.S.A. Specification 1,885,007 are referred to.ALSO:Bandages are made from rubber which is rendered capable of adhering to itself, but not appreciably to other surfaces, by dissolving out most of the gummy constituents, and heating until it becomes tacky.
