422,781. Stays; door holders. SHEPPARD, H., 83, Marsh Hill, Erdington, Birmingham, and JONES, A. E. E., Sunny Dawn, Bromwich Road, Worcester. May 15, 1933, Nos. 14073, 20418, 26300, and 28127. [Classes 44 and 65 (i)] [See also Group X] An adjustable disappearing stay for hinged or sliding windows, &c., which may form part of operating gear, comprises a pair of flexible chains formed of members adapted for interlocking or abutting engagement between the chains to form a rigid stay, the chains being anchored at one end and free to separate at the other, the separated portions being in line at right angles to the rigid portion and preferably being housed in channels in or on the window frame or window. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of operating mechanism for a vehicle windscreen 17, incorporating a stay comprising two chains each formed of links 23 pivoted together; the chains are pivoted at one end to a plate 19 hinged to the windscreen, and are led into channels 39 in the lower member of the windscreen frame, where they lie hidden. A disc 36 with a spiral ridge engages between parts 24 of the links 23 to feed the chains in or out when rotated by a handle 37 ; when fed out, each part 24 engages between two on the other chain to form a rigid stay, the parts being locked together by projections and recesses 30. In a modification, the links of each chain are fixed to a flexible cable instead of being pivoted to one another. The stay is held automatically in any position by the operating disc, but separate locking means, such as a clamping screw, may be provided, and the operating means may be dispensed with, being replaced by a fixed wedge separating the two chains. Stop members may be provided on the free ends of the chains to limit opening of the window. A friction clutch may be provided in the operating mechanism to avoid overstraining the mechanism or the sash in closing it tightly against its frame. In a further modification, without operating means, the chains are composed of rectangular blocks connected by pivots which allow bending only away from one another, and support one another to form the stay by abutment instead of interlocking.
