Abstract

A hinge assembly with first and second members 13, 14 secured to the fixed frame and opening sash respectively of a window, and links 15, 18, 20 interconnecting the member 13, 14. The link 15 is pivoted to the first and second members, and the links 18, 20 to the second member and first link at their one ends, and pivoted together at their other ends at a pivot which can slide longitudinally of the member 13. When the window is closed, the link 18 lies obliquely of the first and second members so as to be able to exert a force on the window sash to hold it firmly against the fixed frame. <IMAGE>

Description

from the direction of opening of the sash 1 , from the longitudinally centre line of the member 13.
The first and second members of the hinge assembly, and the first, second and third links thereof, are all made from strip of an appropriate metal, e.g. steel or ah aluminium alloy. The pivot points are provided by suitable rivets.
In the fully opened position of the window, shown in Figure 1, it will be noted that the link 18 is in alignment with the member 14. This provides a stop action which tends to hold the window in its open position against the effect of wind. This is in addition to friction at the pivots of the hinge assembly.
As the window is closed, Figure 2, the pivot 22 slides along the slot 23. When the window is fully closed, Figure 3, it will be noted that the link 18 lies obliquely of the members 13, 14, and thus exerts a force on the sash to hold it at its end against the seal 12. At the opposite end of the sash to the hinge assembly, there would of course be a catch of some form to hold the window in its closed position.
1. A hinge assembly for a window, comprising first and second elongate members adapted to be secured respectively to a fixed frame of the window and to an opening sash thereof, a first link pivotally connected to said first and second members, and second and third links connected together at their one ends by pivot means which pivot means is slidable in a path extending longitudinally of said first elongate member, the other ends of said second and third links being pivotally connected respectively to said second elongate member and to said first link at a position intermediate its ends, the lengths and disposition of said links and said path being such that when in its closed position a force is exerted on the sash of the window to hold it firmly against the fixed frame thereof.
2. A hinge assembly according to Claim 1 wherein said second link lies obliquely to said first and second elongate members when the window is in its closed position.
3. A hinge assembly according to Claim 2, wherein said path is defined by a slot in said first elongate member in which said pivot means engages, said slot being offset from the longitudinal centre line of said first elongate member.
4. A hinge assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
SPECIFICATION Hinge assembly This invention relates to a hinge assembly for a window.
The invention provides a hinge assembly for a window, comprising first and second elongate members adapted to be secured respectively to a fixed frame of the window and to an opening sash thereof, a first link pivotally connected to said first and second attachment members, and second and third links connected together at their respective one ends by pivot means which pivot means is slidable in a path extending longitudinally of said first member, the other ends of said second and third links being pivotally connected respectively to said second elongate member and to said first link at a position intermediate its ends, the length and disposition of said links and said path being such that when in the closed position a force is exerted on the sash of the window to hold it firmly against the fixed frame thereof.
These and other features of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a plan view showing a window fitted with a hinge assembly according to the invention, in its fully open position; Figure 2 is a view showing the window in a partially closed position; Figure 3 is a view showing the window in a completely closed position.
The illustrated window comprises a fixed frame 10 and an opening sash 11. A sealing strip 12 surrounds the aperture of the fixed frame 10, to be engaged by the sash 11 when the window is closed to provide a draught proof seal. The sash and frame are secured together by two hinge assemblies, one at the top and one at the bottom of the window.
Each hinge assembly comprises a first elongate member 1 3 secured to the fixed frame, and a second elongate member 14 secured to the sash.
These members are connected by a first link 1 5 which is pivotally connected at 1 6 to the first member 13 and at 1 7 to the second member 14.
There is a second link 1 8 pivotally connected to the member 14 at 19, and a third link 20 which is pivotally connected at 21 to the first link 15. The other ends of the second and third links 1 8, 20 are pivotally connected together at 22 by a pivot means, which pivot means is itself slidable longitudinally of the first member 13 in a slot 23.
It is to be noted that the slot 23 is offset, away
