Abstract

422,502. Trap-nests. THORLIN, W. J., 13, Hill Farm Road, North Kensington, London. Sept. 26, 1933, No. 26443. [Class 5 (ii)] A bob-wire A<1> free to swing inwards or outwards is pivoted at the top of the entrance opening and carries a sliding shutter S which normally rests on cranked portions of the wire. Pins T, projecting from the ends of the shutter S, normally register with notches U in the front wall of the trap but are prevented from passing outwardly through such notches by pivoted flaps X : other notches V are provided at a higher elevation through which the pins may pass to the outside of the nest. A bird, entering, pushes the bobwire inwards and steps on a platform C mounted on a pivot C<2>: should the bird be a non-layer it can return through the entrance by pushing up the sliding shutter S until the pins T can pass through the notches V when the bobwire can swing outwards. Should an egg be laid however it rolls through an opening D and falls on to a cup E this cup descending through the weight and rocking two levers G<1>, G', the one lever G<1>, lifting a locking arm B1 that engages and holds the bobwire in the closed position and the other G<2>, moving an arm J out of the path of a sliding shutter K<1> this shutter falling and opening a passage at the rear of the trap. Until an egg is laid the bobwire is prevented from being pressed inwardly by a second bird by a stop-piece C<1> that is raised into the path of the wire by the rocking of the platform C as the bird settles itself to lay. The egg rolls from the tray E into a drawer O. The bird having laid the egg, passes out through the aperture left open by the fall of the shutter K<1> and steps on a pivoted platform L. This platform, on being depressed by the weight of the bird, actuates a lever M which raises the shutter K1 to its closing position again, the stop arm J then falling back into position to maintain the shutter in this position and the levers G', G<2>, taking up their original raised position in which the arm B<1> is withdrawn from its locking position. The platform L, after the bird has stepped into the pen of laying birds, is returned to its original position by a weight N.
