Abstract

Metallic material, especially that for use as magnetic core material and in permanent magnets, is subjected to mechanical working while forming part of a magnetic circuit extending substantially completely through ferromagnetic material. The work is preferably heated to above the magnetic critical temperature and allowed to cool below that temperature during working. An alloy having a critical temperature of 1470 DEG F., for example, may be worked while cooling from 1600 to 1700 DEG F., or higher, down to 1050 to 1100 DEG F., or slightly lower. The process is applicable to silicon steel, to iron alloys containing chromium, examples of alloys being given in which the chromium content varies between 12 and 18 per cent of chromium or to a stainless steel having 18 per cent of chromium and 8 per cent of nickel, the process in such alloys being stated to increase the resistance to corrosion. The reduction may, if desired, only be of the order of 1 to 3 per cent. The material may be subjected to a stretching action while under the influence of the magnetic field, to remove irregularities while slightly increasing the length.
