Abstract
422,299. Loud-speakers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and OLIVER, D. A., c /o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. Nov. 3, 1933, No. 30608. [Class 40 (iv)] Relates to an electrostatic loud-speaker of the type in which a constant polarizing voltage is maintained between the two electrodes during operation and in which the moving electrode is so flexible that it would be greatly deformed by the force of mutual attraction arising from the polarizing voltage unless that force were opposed by another force. According to the invention, all that part of the space between the two electrodes which is not occupied by solid dielectric is occupied by fluid whose pressure and whose dielectric strength are both greater than that of air at atmospheric pressure. The fluid is preferably air at a pressure substantially exceeding atmospheric. If desired, a stop may be provided outside the moving electrode against which the latter can rest when the polarizing field is not applied and the pressure of the medium is uncompensated. Specification 139,497, [Class 40 (iv)], is referred to.
