Abstract

By incorporating a small quantity such as from 1/10 to 3 per cent of a -polyoxymethylene in a rubber mix containing a semi-ultra or ultra accelerator, for example, mercaptobenzothiazole zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate, the reaction product of mercaptobenzothiazole and diphenylguanidine, or an aldehyde-amine condensation product such as that formed from butyraldehyde and aniline, scorching at temperatures below 260 DEG F. is substantially prevented, and the mixture can be stored before vulcanization without the necessity for cooling. The admixture of a -polyoxymethylene also prevents gelling of self-curing or air-curing cements, and lessens the amounts of softeners such as pine oil or pine tar which need to be incorporated with rubber stocks as scorch retarders. As a constituent of heavily loaded stocks, such as rubber flooring, sole, toplift, and bead stocks, they also serve to improve the elastic qualities. The rubber compositions to which the invention is applicable may also contain reinforcing pigments, activators, softening agents, antioxidants, &c. Examples of mixes are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of the following substances as scorch retarders:-2-nitrobrom-4-benzenesulphonic acid, phthalic anhydride, glyceryl phthalate, dimethyl sulphate, glycol linoleate, glyceryl abietate, zinc resinate, benzoin, zinc abietate, cholesterol, pyridyl glycose 2-4-dinitrochlorbenzene, and triphenylthiophosphate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
