Abstract
421,721. Photographic plates. RENWICK, F. F., 6, Reed Pond Walk, Gidea Park, and KING, R. B., Merton, Margaret Avenue, Shenfield, both in Essex. May 31, 1933, No. 15740. [Class 98 (ii)] An antihalation layer for plates or films comprises silver chloride or bromide suspended in gelatine &c. and dyed with a dye which is fast to the silver salt and forms an insoluble lake containing a very small proportion of dye. The silver salt, which is relatively insensitive to light, is removed in the fixing bath leaving only a very small dye stain which may, if desired, be eliminated by leaching or bleaching. For ordinary emulsions, yellow, orange or red dyes are employed and for panchromatic emulsions, blue-green or black dyes. The antihalation layer may be applied to the back of the support or between the support and emulsion layer. Examples are given involving a gelatine-silver-iodobromide negative emulsion with an intermediate antihalation layer consisting of dyed silver chloride suspended in gelatine. A slow silver bromide emulsion may be employed in place of the silver chloride. The invention is applicable to medium to high speed emulsions. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of a dyed insoluble silver salt for the antihalation layer.
